about

Part way through recording the follow up to Silver City Highway's 2008 album, Everything is Breaking, the band's singer/song-writer Fergus McAlpin and double bass player Adam Afiff headed back into the studio at night to record their debut duo album.

Roller One was recorded in a matter of days at Andrew McGee's vineyard in Nagambie, it was mixed by Casey Rice (Tortoise,) and mastered by Kramer (Galaxie 500, Low). Roller One will be released by Melbourne boutique label, Torn and Frayed (The Dirty Three, Conway Savage, James McGann, Jacky Winter, Spencer P Jones).

From the opening notes of "Back in my Arms" you know at once you are being led by the hand to the most quiet and intimate workings of a pained creative mind. Fergus's song writing evokes Johnny Cash's sultry crooning, Nick Drake's fragility and Townes Van Zandt's country-folk poetics. Fergus and Adam's debut displays both a romantic grittiness as well as a taunting kindness, held with heartbeat steady by the pair's musical union. The songs contain Fergus's acutely perceptive conviction and roam beyond into a stark, yet stunning musical landscape. Adam's bass playing bends and strains like a man short of emotional breath, each note welcome and vital.
